Meet Mr. October!

LEO

Age: 17 months

Weight: 10.65 pounds - Good body condition

Gender: Neutered Male

Demeanor at the Veterinary Office: Very cooperative boy!

Leo's mom reports:

Leo was born in April of 2013. He is very adventurous, and likes to climb everything. Whenever I am coming home, he is always sitting on the kitchen window sill. When he was a baby, he was so small, I had to build him stairs to get everywhere. Now, he is able to jump from the ground onto the top of the refrigerator! Quite fussy, Leo does not like to be held, and yet, demands attention. He contorts and stretches his body as he sleeps, and his favorite toy is a brand new cardboard box to jump around in.

Meet Mr. September!

SMEAGOL

Age: 3 years
Breed: Devon Rex
Gender: Male
Weight: 9.6 pounds - excellent body condition!
Feline friends: Spaz (12 year old DLH)

Smeagol is a white, male devonshire rex of about 10 lbs.

He enjoys Whiskas temptations treats, cardboard boxes, playing fetch, stalking, and snuggles.

Sometimes he is where he is not supposed to be such as: the top of ladders, up on shelves, or on the kitchen counters. He refers to these places as “the land of above.”

He is a snuggle cat and he will make multiple attempts and whines until he gets a lap or can burrow under a blanket.

He likes to help whenever work is being done. As condo repairs happen here and there, Smeagol will always be near. He inspects everything, and anything new must meet his high standards.

Boxes are his favorite thing to play with, when a new package arrives he is there waiting for it to be opened. Sometimes he cannot wait and will assist in the opening of the package.

When you meet Smeagol, he will take a while to warm up to you but once he is happy with you he will climb to the top of your shoulder and sit there. This is now his spot and he is your friend.

Demeanor at the vet: Very sweet boy!

Here are some fun facts about Mr August:
--Sammy is our 1st purebred cat and he is a Toyger.
--He LOVES to play, play, play. His favorite toy is “Da Bird”. He likes to catch his “prey” and puts the feather toy or mouse in his food dish before he starts eating.
Sammy the toyger playing || Exclusively Cats Veterinary Hospital, Waterford, MI--The picture in the calendar is one of the few times he accepted having the harness and leash on him. The 1st time we put it on him he fell over like it weighed 500 lbs - He is so dramatic!  I thought it was safe to go in the house for a few seconds and I came back outside and he was in the tree!
Sammy the toyger and his best buddy Roo || Exclusively Cats Veterinary Hospital, Waterford, MI
--He also loves to supervise when we are taking a shower…he talks and talks and paws and paws on the door. As soon as the door is opened he prances in and continues to chat away - he is quite vocal.
--He HATES the car! He cried the entire 6 hours it took for us to drive him home from the breeder when he was only 3 lbs and 12 weeks old. He still cries loudly when he has to go to the vet.
--He absolutely loves his brother Roo and wants to sleep with him wherever that might be; if Roo moves, Sammy moves. He is a great addition to our home and we love him to pieces.

Meet Mr. June!

Calendar Cat of the Month

Angus

One of Mom’s co-workers took in a pregnant cat who soon had a sizable litter.  I was one of those kittens. My human-mommy waited to receive me at work with a large dog crate under her desk complete with climb-toy, litter pan, food and water.  She played AC/DC songs for me because of my namesake, Angus (Young).  Lunchtime was filled with laughter and cuteness while I cautiously explored a conference room with Mom and her friends.  Feeling bonded, I made sure Mom could hear me calling out for her when she ran an errand down the hallway.

Mom had an older, female cat when I entered my new home.  I loved this cat, Harrison, on the spot; she did not like me – at all. Mom took me on a previously arranged camping trip the next day.  It rained.  I batted at the raindrops as they ran down the outside of the tent.  During dry times, I sat in my large crate on the picnic table while Mom did her homework.  At night, I slept next to mom’s head to keep warm.  Although my new sister was not pleased to see me when we returned home, she warmed to me after six months.

I have lived life! I enjoyed speeding fearlessly through the house and exploring every crevice.  I’ve been caught in mid air trying to fly over the balcony; I pulled a large tray of stones and seashells off of Mom’s dresser during the night; and I knocked a mantle clock off of a shelf - among many other misdemeanors.

A year and some later, Harrison passed on.  I yowled around the condo a lot.
Thinking that I missed my sister, Mom got me a baby brother.  Before we were introduced, I silently crept into the room where my mom was playing with Mozie … and watched.  Within four days, we were best friends.  He needed me, having been removed from his litter too soon.  I showed him how to be a kitty-cat and life went on peacefully for the three of us.
I still yowled a lot around the condo, though!

Several years later, I accepted a dad (after a time) and his elderly cat.  That cat passed and we got another brother, Ru.  I loved Ru!  Sometimes even young cats pass and I lost my Ru.  Soon after, Dr. Palen was my champion in helping me, who had never been sick, survive a serious URI. I was hospitalized for days.

Much has happened between then and now.  I am finally feeling well again after bouts of ailments these past few years. Mozie and I gained two more fur-brothers and two years after that, a sister joined the fold.  Mom and Dad have two employees in the house now, as well. I permit them to pet me. Mom commends me on my graciousness.

It isn’t easy maintaining Alpha-cat status with so many changes, but I have.  I love my catio and sometimes play with the younger cats.  Somewhere along the way, Mozie and I have fallen out of friendship.

I am now eleven years old. I maintain a special relationship with Mom where she understands my quiet nature and I trust her completely.  I am the one cat who eats whatever Mom or Dad serve.  My favorite toy was a tattered ball that has been handed down to all the kittens (and has seen many washings).  We time-share the beds, furniture, and carpet-trees around the house. Most nights I sit on Mom in her chair and sleep by her legs. As I instruct Mom on what to write for my story, I am dozing near old Mozie. Life is strange. Strong, gentle silent type that I’ve become, no one would ever recognize me as the reckless kitten that I once was.

Meet Mr. May!

TABBIE

Tabbie is the largest cat in the house and the biggest baby.  His best friend his his little brother Peetie and he also has taken a shine to our mini doxie Oliver.  He almost always sleeps with his tongue hanging out and at the highest point in the house (AKA top of the kitty condo).  He is afraid of loud noises and the recently acquired chickens we have. He stuck his nose in their cage and got pecked!  His favorite toy is a red feathered puff ball that he chases around the house crashing into things around 1am every night.  He also has a stuffed wolf that he carries around and meows.   He talks and people often think he says "mama" I of course believe he is saying it.  All in all he is a big softie and a true joy to have in our lives.

Meet Mr. March!

 Indigo
Age: 11 years
Weight: 13.25 pounds.
Gender: Neutered Male
Demeanor at the vet's office: Cooperative, headstrong and confident!

Indigo (Indy) was bought from a breeder in Washington, Michigan.  He was 1 of 4 Siamese blue point kittens.  He was named Indigo not only because of his color, but because he runs around the house at about 50 miles an hour, hence Indy, reminding me of the Indy 500 race.

No matter where I am, he is with me, especially since I have retired.  He tries to help anyone that comes in my home: contractors, friends and family.  He has to be right there including in my bed at night.  He loves his "mama".  He has a great personality and will come to anyone that comes into my home.  He plays with many different toys, but prefers his little mice that he throws all over, but his favorite past time his annoying his sister (Kahlua, a chocolate point Siamese) bought from the same breeder.

His favorite food is anything to do with seafood, preferably Fancy Feast, but the ultimate is real tuna in water, not oil.  Indigo drives me nuts sometimes, but he is truly a pleasure to have around.  I love him dearly.

Meet Mr. January!

Sherlock Holmes

Age: 9 years
Weight: 16.25 pounds.
Gender: Neutered Male
Demeanor at the vet's office: Grumpy. Sherlock needs sedation for his exams - but we know that he is an awesome, loving cat at home!

Hello, my name is Sherlock Holmes. I am 9 years old and I live with my family in Walled Lake Michigan. I was born in Hikone Japan. When I was just a few days old, someone shut me in a box and put me by a river. I was very lucky my mom heard me crying while walking home from work. She had only been living in Japan a few weeks at the time. She found a nice vet, Dr. Miyajima, who took care of me for a few weeks until my eyes opened and I was well enough to come home. My mom kept me warm, bottle fed me, and played with me a lot. I lived for the first few years of my life in a small apartment in Hikone until my mom decided to move back to America.

I had no idea where America was but it must have been very far away. I was in my carrier for two hours on a train and 14 hours on a plane. My mom had my carrier on her lap the whole time, but I was still very scared. I like living in Michigan. I have many bird and squirrel friends that come to my door wall everyday to say 'hi'. I am a bit of a trouble-maker and very wary of people I don't know. My favorite things are eating tuna, being warm, and hanging out with my family.

Tiny baby Sherlock!
Cozy kitten

Meet Miss December!

Josie

Age: 19 months
Weight: 8.65 pounds.
Gender: Spayed female
Demeanor at the vet's office: Wiggly!

Hi,
My name is Josie Rose.  I was born on April 25, 2012, on a farm in Woodland, Michigan. So how did I come to live with my Mom and Dad in Clarkston?

My Mom started a new job, Nurse Case Manager, for a company in Hastings, MI. Mom was very sad at the loss of her kitty, Callie, in May.  A co-worker stated she had a Calico named Katie, that just had a litter of 6 and one was a Calico—Yep, that’s me!
I was taken to the hotel that my Mom was staying at.  We bonded instantly. I was still too young to leave my biological Mom so I had to wait another week to go to my new home.

My Mom picked me up at the farm and we both cried all the way to Clarkston. I was given a “bubble bath” upon arrival at my new home and then swaddled in a blanket.
I love playing with my Mom and Dad.  Dad says Mom and I are like the “Pink Panther and Kato”.  I love to jump out at Mom as she is walking by, then she chases me and I hide behind a door. She pretends not to know where I am so I stick my paw out so she will see me.  She laughs at me every time!

I love to sit on Mom’s rocking chair.  It has two cushions that are very comfy.  I also enjoy watching the chipmunks when they come up on the deck. Once I knocked the screen out of the window to get at one—MISSED!!!

I love being with my family but I have to get used to Mom and Dad’s two granddaughters—they frighten me when they scream.

I hope you enjoyed hearing my story!  Thank you for choosing me to be Miss December.  It is Mom’s favorite month.
Love,
Josie

Josie, all grown up!

What a beautiful girl!

Meet the November Calendar Cats: Rocky and Patches!

 Rocky and Patches
ROCKY:
Age: 9/1/1993 - 1/28/2013
Gender: Neutered Male
Demeanor at the vet's office: A little grumbly, but he never really meant it.

PATCHES:
Age: 17 years
Weight: 10.0 pounds.
Gender: Spayed Female
Demeanor at the vet's office: Nice, but vocal
Feline Friends:   Milo (3y) and Kay (8m)

Rocky had a "rocky" start.  He was found on the curb of the street, appeared to be less than 2 months old, and had been mistreated.  He fit in the palm of one hand.  But he was a fighter and survivor.  He was also one of the most graceful cats we have ever seen.  He could go from the floor to the top of a highboy dresser in one graceful leap - and he loved be up high, looking down at the world.  I have attached one of my favorite photos of Rocky.  He loved Christmas trees - especially when he could reach the ornaments from a convenient perch.  As you can see here, I caught him in the act of taking a swing at one of them when he was young.  But he never destroyed anything on our holiday trees; it was almost as though he knew not to touch the glass ornaments.

Patches joined us when Rocky was about three years old.  They were very different cats.  He was adventurous and curious; she was gentle and content to play solo.  We always had more cats around, but Rocky never bonded with the others in the same way he did with Patches.  We often found them cuddled together.  They were wonderful friends, and while Patches has been "courteous" to others, she has never bonded with any other cat in the household like she did with Rocky.

We are so glad this photo was selected last year, especially when we lost Rocky in January, 2013.  We miss him very much, and are grateful to have this wonderful calendar as part of his legacy.

Meet Mr. September: A Life Remembered

Vitesse
1999-2013

*Note:  “Vitesse”-means “speed” in French and “Vite” means “quick” or “hurry up”;  I decided on the name because he was so fast when playing with his tinsel toy when I first met him

Age:  14 ½ years
Gender:  Neutered Male
Breed:  Selkirk Rex, Silver Smoke
Vitesse at 6-7 months of age

At the beginning of July, we found out that Vite had cancer.  After a whirlwind 3 weeks, we ended up losing Vite.  So instead of the original bio we had planned to write, we have written this memorial to share a little about the “handsome boy” who so blessed our lives.

When I first met Vite, he was 6 months old.  A friend had decided to take him from the breeder along with an 8-week old kitten that he had gotten but was planning on returning him because he just wasn’t adjusting well to his new home—all he did was hide under the beds.  For some reason, things changed when Vite met me.  (I always say he “picked” me.)  He came out from under the bed, played with the tinsel toy I had and crawled on my lap to be petted and purr as we sat down to watch a movie.  At the end of the evening, my friend let me know that if I didn’t take him home with me, he was going to have to send him back to the breeder where the chances of being adopted would probably be pretty slim.  (Guilt—what a powerful tool!)  Needless to say, I found myself stopping at a pet store to get all the supplies I’d need for the new addition to my family.

Right from the beginning, I knew that Vite was special.  I hadn’t gotten a pet, I had adopted a child and I truly believe that he somehow thought that I was his mother.  From the very first night, I found out my life would be never be the same!  I was a very light sleeper and since Vite liked crawling on me, I tried shutting the door at bedtime.  I quickly found out from the crying outside the bedroom door that wasn’t going to work for him.  He just had to lie on my chest or on the pillow next to me with his paw on my cheek purring as we went to “sleep” at night.  It didn’t take long for me him me to realize that Vite had worked his way into my heart and I would love him and spoil him forever.

We have had several weeks to try to adjust to not having Vite with us, but I still think of him every day and all of the quirky things he did.  He had such a unique personality and never lost his kitten-like playfulness.  I can still see him playing with his toys, going outside and “patrolling the perimeter” of the house (as he truly thought he was a panther), laying spread eagle on the living room floor watching TV with us, sleeping on the couch next to me, chasing his sister, climbing into any open box or bag or just crawling on the table or counters (yes, he was that spoiled!) to sleep or just hang out.  He even used to let me put my head on him and use him as a pillow while we lay on the couch together and would follow me around the house just to be near me.  (My husband always called him a “momma’s boy.”)

It was just the two of us for several years, but Vite finally got the “papa” he always yearned for when my husband came into the picture.  It took a little bit for Vite to warm up to Dave but once he did, it was all over for Dave.  Vite had him wrapped around his paw in no time and Dave came to love him just as much as I did.  They ended up forming their own special bond and routines that didn’t include me.  Every day after work was “guy” time.  Wherever Vite was in the house, he would come running, jump on the table so that he could nudge Dave to be petted, get his crunchy treats and then, if it was nice enough, go outside.  When Dave took off his shoes, we’d find Vite laying on them or next to them with his leg draped over them.  He even got to the point where now and then he would sleep next to him at night and would let Dave flip him upside down and carry him around like rag doll (something that was previously reserved for just me).

While there are so many things I miss about Vite, I miss our nighttime routine the most.  When it was time to head up to bed, Vite would be hot on my heels heading up the stairs, waiting for me to get settled in bed (sometimes not even waiting).  Once in bed, Vite would purr and knead the crook of my arm while I petted him, then move down between my knees, lay down, purr and settle in so we could read and have “story time” until I went to sleep.  And the next day, we’d wake up to start all over again.

Losing Vite has definitely left a huge hole in our lives and in our hearts.  Although it is a hole that I am sure will never be fully filled, we will never forget all of the joy and love that he brought to our lives.

We would like to express our deep appreciation to the entire staff at Exclusively Cats for the care they gave Vite throughout his life.  Not only for the excellent medical care (especially with his diabetes) but also for the love they showed him whenever we brought him in.  We would also like to thank them for the compassion, support and comfort they have shown us as we have gone through our loss and grief.  Your kind thoughts have helped make an extremely difficult time more bearable.

From Exclusively Cats Staff: Vitesse was a very sweet boy when he came to see us - which was frequently, because he was a diabetic. We will always remember his handsome face, and the dignity with which he allowed us to work with him. He was always affectionate when we saw him, and we could tell there was a certain mischief in him that he reserved for his home life. We will miss him very much, as he was such a presence when he was here.
